Regional review
Africa
African markets range from well-defined national systems — such as South Africa under SAHPRA and Nigeria under NAFDAC — to jurisdictions where the framework is being built, alongside regional harmonisation through the African Medicines Agency and continental trade integration under AfCFTA. Requirements should be confirmed country by country.
Sourcing considerations
Pre-import registration and, in a number of markets, pre-shipment inspection by an appointed agency are common. Buyers should establish early whether the product category requires registration held locally and how long that process takes, because it usually exceeds the lead time of the material itself.
Documentation requirements
Typical requests include a specification, batch COA, SDS, certificate of origin, and a free-sale or export certificate. Several authorities additionally require documents to be legalised, and some require pre-shipment inspection certificates issued before departure.
Import considerations
Port and inland clearance times vary widely, and pre-shipment inspection regimes mean documentation must be complete before dispatch rather than corrected on arrival. Onward inland transport can be the longest leg of the journey.
Shipping and transport
Ambient temperatures and multi-leg inland routing make packaging and cold-chain planning central; carriers and destination handling capability should be confirmed before a temperature-sensitive shipment is booked.
Questions buyers should ask
- Which country and which authority governs this product?
- Is local product registration required and who holds it?
- Is pre-shipment inspection mandatory?
- Which documents require legalisation?
- What is the inland route and its temperature exposure?
